WAIKATO PLAYERS MEMBERS OF VICTORIOUS NZ TEAM

Waikato players Joe Wu and Oliver Leydon-Davis, were members of the New Zealand team which recently won the Whyte Trophy, a 3 test series against Australia. They played an important part in winning the trophy for the 7th consecutive time for NZ. Well done to all the players.

The Waikato Team is the Runners-Up of the 2009 Wisden Cup, our players literally fighting a battle on court against Waitakere in an exciting final!!! Congratulations to all the players!!! It was an enormous effort.

Congratulations to Madeleine Stapleton who won two titles, the womens doubles and mixed doubles, at the Auckland U17 Open. She partnered Melissa Yin and Evan Lee in the events, both from North Harbour.

ELITE SQUAD 2009 TRAINING BEGINS ON 27th JANUARY
It is now time to start our 2009 season, the Elite Squad trainings will start again on the 27th of January, from 4 to 6 Monday to Friday.

WAIKATO TRAINING CAMP AT THE BEACH
Waikato Development Club is holding a training camp at Whangamata beach on 6th to 8th February. The cost is $210 which covers three meals, accommodation and training.
Places are limited to a maximum of 20 players.

Even though we were the youngest team, we nearly upset defending champions Auckland, keeping them to 8-8 but unfortunately we lost by 5 sets. The Waikato team displayed exceptional team work and spirit especially the youngsters who tested themselves against the best in New Zealand and often came out on top.

WAIKATO GOT 5th PLACE IN NI 14’s and 16’s TEAM EVENT

After a long week in Palmerston North, our team showed how hard they work for the last six months. Getting the fifth place in the North Island 14s and 16s tournaments after losing to the winner in a good tie, it proved that Waikato players are improving in all the squads (14s, 16s, 18s). The Waikato Badminton Association is proud of their players with the effort they did during last week.

Bjorn Seguin got second place, lost to Ethan Haggo in a really close game, while Deyanira lost to number one seeded Clare Chapple from Auckland. Oliver with his partner Emily Ang from Waitakere lost to senior players John Moody/Catherine Moody also in the final. |

After the good individual results of the Waikato players during the last 4 months, the team events also got pretty good results.
Waikato Division 3 team has no lost any tie in that division. The week will end in June 27th and our team has to play against Auckland 3 and 4. The team will play in Waikato Badminton Stadium, starts at 9am. Come and support our team!!! |

Craig Cooper, one of our high perfomance players in New Zealand National Squad is qualified to Beijing with his mixed double partner Renee Flavell from Auckland. He is one of the three New Zealand badminton players that have been confirmed for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games after plenty of travel and a big effort against some of the world’s best to meet the qualifying criteria. The NZ Police New Zealand 21s Championships was held at Waikato Badminton Stadium (25-28 April) and it was the major associations of Waikato, Auckland, North Harbour and Waitakere that once again dominated a badminton event in New Zealand.
